Custom domains

A custom domain serves your tracking code from an address you own, so the request goes to your own subdomain instead of ours.

The usual reason is that a tracking request from a first-party address is less likely to be blocked than one to a third party, so a custom domain typically means more of your traffic is counted. It also keeps your analytics setup on your own name.

A subdomain is the normal choice - something like analytics.yourdomain.com - rather than the domain itself.

Setting one up

Add the domain on the Custom domains page, then point it at us in your DNS. The page tells you which record to create for this installation.

A new domain stays Pending until it has been approved, so it will not serve traffic the moment you add it. Once it is active you can select it when you create or edit a website, and that website's tracking code will be served from it.

Changing the host of a domain that is already active returns it to Pending, because the new address has to be checked in its turn.
